Bucharest
Even though we weren't big fans of Ukraine, it prepared us for Bucharest.
We'd heard some awful things about this city. It was dirty, scary, and there were dogs everywhere.
All this is true, but at the same time Bucharest is exciting, and it feels untouched by tourism. You can walk the streets here and discover alleys full of clubs, bars and cafes. There is music blaring from every car stopped at a red light, and through every open apartment window. The people are friendly and many can speak English (but they are still huge fans of adidas tracksuits, mullets, and 'double denim' outfits - which were all very popular in Russia and Ukraine!)
I think the dirtiness isn't bothering us anymore after travelling in Moscow and Lviv. Any grime in Bucharest is overshadowed by a constant feeling of youthful excitement and culture. Bucharest feels like a breath of fresh air in comparison to our previous stops.

5 countries in 8 weeks so far - and Ukraine can't bother to tidy up for your arrival???
I know of some teenagers' bedrooms that are like Bucharest...lots of denim and music which take the focus away from the dirt!! Glad to see you are only seeing the important things........(and taking your mothers' advice). We are loving the blog. Happy travels
Love
We didn't dislike Ukraine for the dirt... it was more because of the crime (we had things stolen from our hotel room, and the streets don't feel safe), the unfriendliness of some people (many were great, but they didn't like foreigners who were trying to communicate with very minimal Ukrainian language skills!), the lack of respect they had for their beautiful architecture (amazing 16th century buildings covered in neon or falling apart), and it rained most of the time - but they couldn't help that! Lviv was worth seeing for the experience of it. We think that in a few more years, it could be a great place to visit.
oh no! I hope they just stole your denim jackets and nothing else. But really, I would think anyone with even very minimal Ukranian language skills, as opposed to no Ukranian language skills whatsoever, should be entirely commended...
sounds kinda like belgrade. dirty and ick, but man, there's just something exciting about a place that may just get its act together kinda soon...
when do you get to your french home? i get to europe next friday!!! if you're passing, come watch an australian soccer (football! doesn't seem quite right does it?) match on a big screen!
